How many teams get eliminated in the group stage?
With 48 teams in 12 groups, 16 teams are eliminated after the group stage:
- All 12 fourth-placed teams (last in their group) are automatically out
- The 4 worst third-placed teams (out of 12 third-place finishers) are also eliminated
- The 8 best third-placed teams advance to the Round of 32
So 32 teams survive the group stage out of 48 — a much higher survival rate than the old 32-team format where 16 of 32 were eliminated.
Which big nations could be eliminated early?
With 48 teams and only 4th-place finishers guaranteed out, very few traditional powers will be eliminated in the group stage. Even a team finishing 3rd has a good chance of qualifying.
Notable nations that did NOT qualify for 2026: Italy (failed to qualify), Egypt (failed to qualify). Italy are the biggest absentee — two-time defending European Champions who also missed 2022.
Why is Italy not at the World Cup 2026?
Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — their second consecutive World Cup absence. They also missed Qatar 2022 after a playoff loss to North Macedonia. Italy are four-time World Cup winners (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and their consecutive absence is one of the biggest stories in international football.
When are teams eliminated in the knockout rounds?
The knockout rounds from Round of 32 onwards are single-elimination — lose one match and you're out:
- Round of 32 (Jun 28–Jul 3): 16 teams eliminated, 16 advance
- Round of 16 (Jul 4–8): 8 teams eliminated, 8 advance
- Quarter-finals (Jul 9–11): 4 teams eliminated, 4 advance
- Semi-finals (Jul 14–15): 2 teams eliminated (go to 3rd place play-off), 2 go to Final
- Final (Jul 19): 1 champion, 1 runner-up
